Which Essential Oils Are Dangerous to Use Before Sun Exposure?

Essential oils are effective in treating sun spots and sun-related damage to the skin. However, there are some essential oils you should be cautious of using before going out in the sun. Some essential oils can be phototoxic, aka cause skin irritation when exposed to UV rays.

Citrusy essential oils, such as Sweet Orange are the most common photosensitive essential oils. This is because citrus-based oils contain compounds called furanocoumarins that increase UV sensitivity. Below is a list of some essential oils you should use at least 24 hours before going out in direct sunlight.

Grapefruit essential oil can be diffused and applied topically to heal acne and improve skin vitality, but you should avoid contact with the sun for 24 hours.

Lemon and Lime essential oils are uplifting, stimulate focus and boost immunity. You should also stay away from the sun for at least a day after using these oils.

Sweet Orange essential oil is uplifting and can be used to support good digestion. Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after use.
