Your Skin is Probably Dehydrated

You’ve probably heard someone describe their skin as dehydrated or seen products marketed towards dehydrated skin. It’s easy to ignore these messages when you know your skin is oily, normal or a combination of both. However, it is important to understand that dehydration is not a skin type but instead a skin condition.

Dehydration affects all skin types but the good news is it’s absolutely reversible!

Dehydration Vs. Dry

So you might be wondering what the difference is? Dry skin is skin that’s lacking in sebum, our body’s natural oil. Dry skin is genetic and persists all year long. Skin typically feels tight and in severe cases rough to the touch.Dehydrated skin on the other hand is lacking in water and moisture. This condition tends to be temporary or might be exaggerated during particular seasons, ex. cooler/winter month.

Dehydration is also a bit difficult to detect because it manifests differently depending on your skin type.A common example: oily skin that is dehydrated will produce more oil, sounds wild right! However, oily skin will produce excess oil to make up for the lack of hydration. So how can you tell if your skin is dehydrated? Simple! Try noticing if your skin feels tighter and drier than normal. Additionally, fine line, wrinkles and flakiness can all be signs of dehydration.

There’s a fix for that

The best way to combat dehydration is to give your skin what it craves and that’s moisture, moisture and more moisture. A good rule to follow is to start with watery products and slowly work up to thicker, heavier butters and creams. Here’s a simple regimen below:

  • Use a hydrating face toner. The Face Toner has the ability to provide a deeper cleanse, removing excess oils and impurities. It also provides extra moisture which plumps the skin and allows your serum to sink in.

Bonus Tip: try a hydrating face spray when you need a quick burst of moisture. These are perfect over makeup or after a workout.

  • Signs of dehydrated skin include dullness, hyperpigmentation and fine lines. A serum that contains Vitamin C and A can assist with reversing these skin conditions, leaving skin looking brighter and more youthful.
  • Don’t forget to lock in all that moisture. Here’s where your face creams get to shine, try something super hydrating and replenishing. An intensely moisturizing face cream that contains humectants will draw water molecules from the atmosphere onto your skin, providing it with constant hydration.
  • Try a twice weekly mask to exfoliate and purify the skin. Exfoliation helps in buffing away dead skin and de-clogging pores which will allow all your moisturizing products to seep into your skin better.
  • Lastly but most certainly not least, top off with a reparative lip balm. Your lips deserve some attention too
